Carbon Capture Canada wraps up successful 2024 event

Sold-out event hosts thousands of industry leaders in Edmonton to explore the future of carbon capture, utilization and storage in Canada

Edmonton, Alberta (September 13, 2024) – The 2024 Carbon Capture Canada conference, organized by dmg events, concluded in Edmonton this week and marked a sold out event that saw over 4,000 attendees from across Canada and around the world. The event, which took place at the Edmonton Convention Centre from September 10 to 12, featured dynamic discussions and exhibitions that showcased cutting-edge Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies, and policies and investment opportunities crucial to advancing national and international climate goals.

Notable highlights from Carbon Capture Canada 2024 included:

  • Government officials, including The Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier, Government of Alberta; The Honourable Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals, Government of Alberta participated in discussions on how Canada can meet climate targets such as reducing emissions by 40-45 per cent by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050.
  • Over 150 expert speakers addressed major themes during the strategic conference, including the CCUS projects that are driving decarbonization, investment strategies and the transformative role of carbon capture in Canada’s clean energy future.
  • Key speakers at the conference included Senator Anna M. Caballero, State Senator, 14th District, California State Senate; Adam Auer, President and CEO, Cement Association of Canada; Andrea Hepp, President, Low Carbon Storage Hub, Shell; Andreas Karlsen, Chief Executive Officer, Varme Energy AS (Global); Brett Henkel, Co-Founder & Senior Vice President of Business Development, Svante; Christophe Malaurie, Senior Vice President of Decarbonization Solutions, Technip Energies; Daniel Nathan, Chief Project Development Officer, Climeworks; Patrick Chabot, Managing Director, Canada Growth Fund Investment Management; and Pavel-Casian Nitulescu, State Secretary, Energy Ministry of Romania.
  • Canada was highlighted as a leader in CCUS with several major projects at the forefront of the strategic conference, including:
    • the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, a partnership between ATCO EnPower and Shell Canada Limited (Shell) that will store industrial emissions from Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and is set to be operational by 2028;
    • the proposed Polaris CCUS project by Shell, designed to capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals conference each year; and
    • the Pathways Alliance announcement of its $16.5 billion carbon capture pipeline project.
  • 101 exhibiting companies showcased the latest technologies, innovations and services in the industry, offering attendees hands-on insight into the future of CCUS. Attendees engaged with interactive displays and attended sessions covering advances in Direct Air Capture (DAC), artificial intelligence, quantum engineering technologies and more.
  • Delegates experienced sold-out site tours, the Heidelberg Materials Edmonton Cement Plant and the Shell Quest Site, gaining first-hand knowledge of how these projects are reducing emissions and advancing CCUS technology in real-world applications.
  • The Carbon Capture Awards gala awarded seven individuals and companies awards in categories including the Carbon Storage, CCUS Leader of the Year, Innovation in CCUS Technology and more. Over 150 participants were in attendance.
  • The event also offered multiple opportunities for attendees to network at the Industry Night Reception on September 10 and the Young Women in CCE Networking event on September 11, designed to inspire the next generation of energy professionals.
