Opening Panel: Supporting Canada’s Carbon Opportunity
- 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM
• One of the biggest opportunities to meet our 2050 goals and get emissions out of our atmosphere is to capture and sequester them—underground or in products—permanently. • A closer look at the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) system, the world’s newest integrated, large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) system • The full carbon value chain, from capture at NWR Sturgeon Refinery and Nutrien Redwater Fertilizer facility through delivering it safely via Wolf Carbon Solution's ACTL pipeline, to permanent storage at Enhance Energy's site in Clive, Alberta. • 'Show and Tell' from decades old history to present day on CCUS coming of age in Alberta • What's Alberta's advantage for CCUS? • What does a thriving CCUS sector look like for the average Canadian?

Project Focus: The Sturgeon Refinery CCS
- 1:15 PM - 1:30 PM
The Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery built in Canada in over 35 years. The only refinery designed from the outset with a carbon capture solution, it uses leading technology to maximize performance and minimize environmental impacts. In fall 2013, shovels officially broke ground on the project site in Sturgeon County. Peak construction saw over 8,500 workers on the project daily, in addition to thousands of jobs in engineering firms and fabrication shops. Commercial operation was officially achieved in June 2020. The refinery is designed to process approximately 79,000 barrels per day of diluted bitumen from Alberta’s oil sands into diesel and other higher value products. Over 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide have been safely captured and sequestered to date while helping to meet North America’s demand for more sustainable fuel.

Decarbonization of the Built Environment
- 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
As a hard-to-decarbonize material, cement and concrete manufacturing is responsible for approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Concrete is the second most used substance on Earth, next to water, and it is expected that the built environment will double by 2060, exponentially increasing the use of concrete. This provides a massive challenge and an incredible opportunity to adopt and scale technologies and materials that could revolutionize the concrete sector.

• What options are utilities considering to meet net zero by 2035? • What policy factors and other factors are at play to inform their decision? • How did these projects select carbon capture over other options? • Now that carbon capture has been selected, what are the next steps to reaching net zero by 2035?
